WHY WE FIGHT
We believe jail expansion is immoral. Our current system of detaining and punishing offenders simply does not work. Rather than preventing crime or rehabilitating citizens, it simply perpetuates a cycle of greed, profiteering and corruption, all at the expense of human lives. Our members have experienced first-hand the social and familial destruction that the current jailing system inflicts on everyone unfortunate enough to be pulled into it's inhumane architecture. Time after time, it's been proven that when the prison industrial complex secures more land to construct more human cages, they will all inevitably be filled, while citizens and the local community suffer the brunt of these damaging consequences.
Not only is jail expansion harmful and unethical; it is also inefficient and bad economics. Taxes are already collected from Whatcom County Citizens for building maintenance and public safety. If spent properly, there is more than enough money to renovate the current jail and to invest in humane alternatives to mass incarceration. Instead, our elected officials are seeking to increase taxes in order to secure massive funds for a larger, more expensive facility, with little to no oversight and no assurances that money will be spent on programs to actually reduce and prevent crime and incarceration. Simply put, citizens are being asked to foot the bill for this expensive and cost-prohibitive new facility and they will not receive a fair return on their investment.
WE BELIEVE IN A BETTER WAY.
We fight for friends and family who have had their lives destroyed by our current criminal justice system.
We fight to reform this broken system and to offer humane alternatives.
We fight to prioritize rehabilitation and proper mental health care for some of our most vulnerable.
We fight for a better community for all citizens of Whatcom County.
We fight, simply, because it is the right thing to do.
